Butterfly valves are shut-off valves for large pipe sizes in water, cooling, process and compressed air lines. The wafer-type body is installed between two flanges, so the valve is light and short even in large sizes where a ball valve would already be a heavy solution.
Valves are available for PN6–PN16 and ANSI 150 flanges, and the seat is chosen according to the medium: EPDM for water, glycol and steam, NBR for oils and compressed air, and PTFE or PTFE lining for chemicals. EPDM does not withstand hydrocarbons, and NBR does not withstand acetone or ketones. The actuator flange complies with ISO 5211, so a manual valve can later be automated without replacing the valve. Large sizes have a gear operator, and the same category also includes models fitted with a pneumatic actuator and limit switch.
Because the disc remains in the flow, choose a ball valve for applications requiring full bore or pipeline pigging, and a gate valve for fibrous or sludgy liquids.
