A gate valve shuts off a line carrying pulp, sludge, wastewater or liquid containing solids, where a ball or butterfly valve would clog or wear. The gate slides across the flow, and when fully open the valve leaves the pipe unobstructed. Typical applications include the pulp and paper industry, wastewater treatment and the chemical industry.
Knife gate valves are installed between EN 1092-1 flanges. They are unidirectional, so the installation direction is shown by the marking on the body. The body is epoxy-coated cast iron, the gate is AISI316 acid-resistant stainless steel and the seal is EPDM. The permitted pressure decreases as the size increases, so check it in the product's pressure table. For long-fibre pulp and sawdust, choose a shearing knife gate valve. Operation is by handwheel with a rising stem or by a double-acting pneumatic actuator, and for small threaded pipes there is a female-threaded gate valve.
A gate valve is made for shut-off and is not used to throttle the flow, because a half-open gate wears and vibrates.
