A brass ball valve is the most common way to shut off a threaded water, compressed air, oil or gas line by hand. A quarter turn shuts off the line, and a full-bore ball does not restrict the flow when open. Starting from mini valves, this category includes female-threaded, female/male-threaded and angle models, models with a butterfly handle for tight spaces and extended models for insulated pipes. For changing direction there are 3-way valves with L or T bore, and models with an ISO 5211 mounting can be fitted with an actuator.
Selection starts with the medium. For gas there are EN331 and DVGW approved gas valves, and for drinking water models approved to EN 13828 and DVGW W 570. For compressed air, a valve with a vent hole that exhausts the line when closing is suitable, and for dirty lines a model with a cleanable mesh strainer. Operating pressure and temperature vary by model and size and are stated in the product information.
For corrosive chemicals and food, choose stainless steel ball valves, and for hydraulic pressures, high-pressure ball valves.
